When social and emotional needs are addressed, students thrive in and out of the classroom
 
We provide services to help all students develop the values of scholarship, character, community, inclusion, and discovery. Our school counselors work collaboratively with students, teachers, administrators, and families to foster physical, social, emotional, and academic wellbeing. Using the core Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) competencies of “Self Awareness,” “Self Management,” “Social Awareness,” “Healthy Relationships,” and “Healthy Decision Making,” we help to create a supportive and growth-oriented environment for students to thrive and reach their academic and personal goals. Ultimately, school counselors are advocates for students’ individual needs and their academic path, and we work with families, school divisions, and our community at large.
 
Our Counseling and Wellness department also strives to create a culture of diversity, equity, and inclusion. This work is essential in order for all students to succeed academically and socially. School counselors promote an understanding of race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender, religion, culture, socioeconomic status and ability levels in lessons, consults, and counseling sessions.

What We Do

The Meadows Counseling and Wellness Department, comprised of professionally trained educational psychologists, serves many roles in each division. We lead classroom lessons and collaborate with teachers throughout the year on curricular topics that involve SEL themes. We serve as resources to enhance each child’s learning and social needs and welcome meeting with families to discuss any issue pertaining to a child’s development. That said, while School Counselors do meet with individuals and groups, we do not provide on-going “therapy.” For more profound and long-term issues, the Counseling Director will work confidentially with families to find a community referral.
 
Roles include:
  • Collaborating with directors, teachers, outside professionals, and families. Although we have a collaborative approach, we honor confidentiality and the privacy of our students.
  • Checking in with students who are self, parent, teacher, or peer referred.
  • Consulting with teachers and teams for strategies on conflict resolution, instructional best practices, and student issues.
  • Observing students at the request of teachers, administrators and/or parents in regards to their social, emotional, and learning needs.
  • Coordinating with Middle School health teachers and Middle and Upper School advisors on curriculum and grade level specific needs. 
  • In Lower School, partner with classroom teachers to teach wellness lessons that enhance students’ learning and relationships with self and others.
  • Promoting inclusion, acceptance of differences, and multicultural competencies within the many groups and communities represented in our school and world.
  • Leading trainings, community circles, and events to address current issues in education, student learning, and wellbeing.
  • Responding to student issues that arise during the day; following up with communication to teachers and parents as needed.
  • Responding to and supporting students and families in crisis.
  • Meeting with parents, with or without their student, to provide support, strategies, and resources for any issue impacting student wellness and academic needs.
  • Developing and evolving the counseling and wellness program as the social and emotional landscape evolves.
